Ah well. He was supposed to be Lewandowski's replacement, and help Dortmund compete for the title....not relegation. But it was not to be, and Ciro just never really hit his stride for Dortmund. However, let's not label him a garbage player who deserves to be put in the bin, because this was a bad season all round for Dortmund.
You can understand why Klopp bought Immobile to replace Lewandowski. In him he saw a striker with a good eye for goal, but also neat control and the ability to bring midfielders into the game. So it would have been a continuation of the forward-play and one-touch football that Dortmund play. But these things don't always turn out to be right. Dortmund just never really found their groove and their great attacking football now became too obvious and easy to defend for all the other bundesliga teams who got clued in. So is it now Immobile's fault that Dortmund were fighting for relegation? Or do we have to turn our eyes to the ridiculous high defensive-line and Klopp's strong case of Wengeritis?
I'm expecting Immobile to make the move away from Dortmund this summer, and I can tell you this right now...he would be a very good buy. People won't be looking at him because he hardly played this season; but if a club take a chance on him, this is a really good striker if put in the right system with a more dynamic coach than Klopp who understands different styles, can really bring in the G's for a team.
In a perfect world....imagine a team of Reus, Gotze, Lewandowski and Immobile? That is a serious attacking power that could properly challenge Wolfsburg and Bayern for the title.
