Everton Must Mix the Pretty with Wins

We all love to watch pretty football. It's how the game should be played. Free-flowing, attacking runs and constant shots on target. In a perfect world, playing the right way would always lead to you winning the match. But that just isn't how the world works.

Everton played really well against Chelsea, and comparing both of their plays, they did not deserve to lose the game. But Martinez has to realize that it's same old story we all know in football and in sports. It's not about how well you play the game, but about getting the win. Especially when you're in the professional business of high-level sports.

In my view, Everton have three of the best players in the Premiership. A great striker who has improved so much that is Lukaku, an excellent attacking midfielder with Barkley and a very confident and untypically English ball-playing defender with Stones. There's a very good team here that should be performing as well as West Ham, who don't have this kind of talent.

What Martinez has to instil in the team is a winning mentality, which teams like Palace and West Ham have. They have the players and the skill to beat anybody in this league, but they need to be ruthless in how they navigate the ninety minutes. Because this is a young team, Martinez is needed a lot more as a guiding influence. You could see when they were winning twice in the game, they had to cool their heads, waste time and suck the juice out of a match that was there for the taking.

In a crazy season like this, if Everton can sort out their defense and really lock into winning games rather than settling on just playing well, they can make their way up to a top seven finish. As a football fan, it sucks to see that they are so far down in the league when they should be much higher. But this is how it work on this level. You need more than just talented footballers, you need players with character and an ability to do the ugly side of this beautiful game.
