If Inter REALLY Want that Title, they Need a Playmaker
With the Serie A about to get back in the flow of things after their winter break, all eyes are on the blue and black kids that sit atop the league. Many didn't think they would even be in the top three let alone be right at the summit of the Serie A. But with Juventus getting their golden mojo back and Fiorentina as well as Napoli not letting up, Inter need reinforcements if they want to hold onto their position.
Mancini has built a very tough and physical team who you need to work hard to beat. They are defensively strong, with probably the best keeper in the league and their midfield resemble that same rearguard mentality of being very difficiult to play through. Their attack is not great but Icardi is good enough to get the goals needed to make them champions. He's that kind of player that can score when it matters. All that's missing is that creative player who can provide.
Sneijder is the perfect example. A player who was known solely for the way in which he could find that critical pass that lead to a goal. The connection between midfield and attack, and a godsend for any striker. His finest hour was with Inter were he played in an excellent Inter under Mourinho. You take Sneijder out of Inter, they don't win the treble. It's as simple as that.
When I have seen Inter play, the way in which they score goals makes no sense to me. It comes out of random circumstances rather than a carefully constructed attack. They have pretty much just found a way to win, without sticking to any philosophy. They don't counter, nor are they all out attack or keep possession and waiting to pounce. They just get the goal, and defend their way to victory.
With finishers like Icardi and Jovetic, Inter can become even stronger if they have a player who sits just outside the D, whose task is to constantly play balls through to the strikers. Pretty much exactly what Ozil does for Arsenal and Germany. A pure passer of the ball whose specialization is through-balls. If Mancini can find that kind of player and sign him before anyone else, then they are serious candidates to win the Scudetto.
I'm sticking with them regardless, but I do understand and recognize the threat posed by Juventus and Dybala. But Inter have a very tough character and their loss to Lazio was very narrow and they could have found their way back in the game, if Melo had remembered to take his medication. So they will fight Juventus all the way till May for this title. If they can get a Sneijder 2.0 this month, then we could see a very closely contested Serie A and maybe a far closer and exciting finish.
