After all this talk of Messi not thinking the World Cup is important...and feeling he has done enough to be seen as a great, I think the truth has dawned on him. I keep telling guys...nobody wanted to listen to me, but STRAIGHT from the man's mouth, he has admitted that he would need to WIN the World Cup to even be compared to the GREAT that is Maradona and be even CONSIDERED as a great himself. The kid is learning...
Maradona, WITHOUT the World Cup would have already been seen as one of the greatest players to play the game. HE WAS THE VERY ESSENCE OF FOOTBALL. The things he did, his grace, his poise and just everything about his game was like watching art. But....that World Cup win just put the final STAMP on him being part of the Executive Club and really being put into history.
Messi pretty much has NO excuses as to why he cannot win the World Cup. He is RIGHT at the prime age, he has THE best attacking force...well, there is no Carlito...but his team is LETHAL enough to win the World Cup, even with a bad defence and OKAY midfield. Oh...and I believe this takes place in his home continent, so there is that advantage as well.
I am liking Messi's frame of mind now. From what people were telling me, I thought that he would be happy leaving the tournament with no goals, and Argentina getting BOUNCED from the quarters. But this is a different tune, I think Messi knows just how much this means to his fellow Argentines. Their only care for Barcelona is that one of their countrymen is their star. But it all comes down to THEIR OWN country over anything Barcelona does, and for a guy who IS the best footballer in the world...he OWES those Argentines a World Cup.
But....this wise old man does not think that will occur....
