I don't think there have been many people that have insulted Allegri a lot more than I have. After the
debacle that was Milan, a pit that they are still in, I was his NUMERO UNO enemy. The belief was that he needed a star player, Ibra, to do all the work for him.
But I can admit...I was half-wrong....Allegri has shown that he is a VERY good manager that does deserve more of our respect for what he is doing with this Juventus team.
What we have all slept on is just how Allegri is one of THE best defensive coaches in the game today. The level of organization and attention to detail he has of keeping the structure of a team is amazing. It was an asset that I just never saw, because again, the spotlight was more on Ibra during his Milan time rather than him. So it just never became apparent that he had any skill or knew what he was doing.
But it's not all rosy with Allegri. He is not on the same level of Mourinho, Ferguson or Lippi. Those coaches are more rounded and can pretty coach any team to success. As far as attacking, that have great dynamic creativity, that is just not what Allegri can give you. What he does have though, is a VERY overlooked edge to football which is the importance of the defence. Too many teams these days are relying on these ball-playing strikers and attacking wingers, and there are no physical teams who preach defence and take pride in restricting a team from getting shots on goal, let alone a goal.
Conte did an AMAZING job with Juventus and is the reason for them having amazing success. However you want to view the competition, Conte built this team, and at the core it is a very strong unit that are equipped to competing against the best in Europe. The only blemish on Conte's time at Juventus was his inability to really make much of an impact in Europe. He just could not offer much of a tactical plan when the opposition went up a level from the dire quality in the Serie A...in comparison to their strength.
Allegri struggled in the group stage, and they could easily have been out. But they are still here, and this Juventus team just seem stronger in Europe to what Conte had. Yes, Dortmund have not had the greatest season. Still, they have been playing well recently and for a team to put THREE G'S past you at your cribb, is a team that must be respected. What Allegri showed was tactical superiority over Klopp. A tough defensive set of lines, and a clever counter-attacking plan with Tevez in the centre of events.
Relax...I am not setting up Juventus to be the surprise Champions League winners. Just saying that these guys look like a very strong unit, and will be hard to beat. Same with FC Porto, not a team that will be favourites, but will be hard to take down. I just like how Juventus have taken it back to the old-skool days of Italian football. I hate where all teams try and play like each other, because it makes the matches less interesting and you don't see that clash of styles. Hence why Juventus and Dortmund was supposed to be two great legs, but Allegri and Juve surprised me by how they actually went to bravely end the game on the night away from home.
So this is a sort of an apology. Allegri still deserves most of the insults I gave him during his Milan reign. However, what he is doing with Juventus, and how he dealt with a Dortmund team that MANY OF YOU thought would knock them out has me having to give him some props. It's great that there is a team out there that preach defence, hard work, physicality and my goodness....that play with TWO DAMN STRIKERS!
Allegri....well done....
