I would never have thought that there would be a time where the great AC Milan would be unable to
defeat Hellas Verona, captained by Luca Toni...at the CRIBB. But it's 2015, Cristina Ronaldo is considered the best player in the world, Serie A is seen as one of the lowest of the elite leagues.....and AC Milan are in the dumper...
So I decided to watch Milan and Verona. Seems that people mock me and throw laughter when I announce I am watching a Serie A match and simply ask if anyone else is joining me. And I have to agree, that my goodness...the standards in the Serie A have dwindled dramatically. It's not yet on Bulgarian league level, but seeing teams like AC Milan play like a mid-table bunch of cats, is a pretty sad state of affairs.
This was always going be an incredibly tough task for Inzaghi. He is now seeing the difficulty Seedorf faced when he was thrown to the lions. It's a team void of any real talent, no backbone, and without the key players to even THINK about a title challenge. The very fact that Milan and Verona both seemed on the same level, with chances at both ends shows that the once great club are really not that much better than HELLAS BLOODY VERONA.
So you have to ask whether it's time for Inzaghi to go and if in fact he is to blame for all the issues at Milan. The answer to the first question is yes, if we are being fair and consistent and looking at the results that he has obtained. Answering the second question is trickier because I can't really lay the blame on him. Those players that I see there, some that are too old and past it and others that are average, are not good enough to finish in the top four.
Juventus, Roma, Napoli, Fiorentina are all on another level to Milan in all aspects of the field. So once you realise that and you thrust the inexperienced Inzaghi into the mix, just how the hell do you expect him to get a top four finish? And if you are to sack him, and bolt the door behind his narrow behind....what exactly is the next step?
I'm not sure what coach can come in, with these kinds of players and get them to the top four. Pazzini just does not have the spark anymore, Honda is no longer the player he once was, Mexes and Bonera are backyard defenders and Muntari and Poli are grafters who don't have the high consistency and quality needed for a proper midfield.
There is also the creativity problem. Both of Milan's goals came from the involvement of Mexes who is THE most uncreative man on the planet. So without a man that can create chances, how do you expect to win matches? There was too much passing around which Verona found very easy to defend against, and only two slip-ups lead to the goals. Apart from that, Milan never really had many shots on goal. And then there is the Menez issue....
Speaking with my Italian dude Mister Salvatore, this man does have a selfish problem. Jeremy is a very good player...but he ain't Ronaldo. Back in the day, when Ronaldo was for Inter, if he was bearing down on goal, you don't DARE call or even make a wish for the ball, because you know that he is most likely good enough to finish off the chance himself. Menez is NOT of this ilk. So he needs to swallow down some pecan humble pie, and try and work with the team and focus on WINNING games rather than trying to be the hero and the superstar.
But before I make this solely on Milan, have to applaud Verona. Very organized and they never gave
up, and kept pushing till they got that goal. Luca Toni is also a striker that is looking pretty useful. A VERY brave penalty, but I just like his character as a striker, which is similar to Mario Gomes...and I just wish that these types of good-old strikers were more appreciated rather than giving us only Benzemas and Lewandowskis.
Milan...oh Milan. Who has money? Will the cash be used for players? What quality players want to play in Italy these days? These are the questions that need to be answered, because if something is not done quick enough....it's going to be a very long time before Milan SNIFF the Champions League.
