They have their number. There is no bigger confidence booster when you have a GREAT track record against a team you are about to face. Mentally you're already at an advantage before that whistle has been blown.
With the first leg score, Simeone and Atletico are in a very good position to land another painful blow to Madrid and knock them out. All that is needed is a win or a scoring draw, meaning any goal they score, will create a problem for Madrid. But it is the fact that Atletico just prove so problematic for Madrid which is what will make the drug dealer confident they can reach the semis.
My theory of why Atletico have done so well against Madrid is to do with how they play. Madrid's danger men are more physical and faster players than skillful. So if you give them space, you'll get shanked, but if you defend tighter and deny them any space, then they will find it hard to break down. And that is what the escaped convicts of Garcia and Gabi do. They get grimey, they make it ugly. And it's a type of game Madrid just don't like.
Then we have the other fact that those jokers called Schalke shifted FOUR g's against Madrid at their cribb. So that is yet another confidence booster for Atletico knowing that Madrid don't have an impenetrable home record that teams like Chelsea and Bayern do. There are so many signs that point to a Atletico victory...but this is football, anything can happen.
If, speaking in a hypothetical sense, Simeone manages to devise a ploy to beat Madrid again and knock them out AT their CRIBB, then people need to really recognise Simeone as one of the best coaches in the game. Because he is doing this with a bunch os escaped convicts and a few skilled players. NOT a team with egos, stars, and prima-donnas.
Oh...and Madrid DARE no lose this match tonight.
