Mario Götze and his Bayern Dilemma
Why oh why didn't little Mario listen to the kid HH way back when, and have left the sticky, stale bench of Bayern for a guaranteed starting place at another club?
This all started because the new cool thing was how Pep Guardiola...was the coolest thing since an ice-cube with shades and a leather jacket. Every player wanted to be coached by him as he was the revolutionary doing things in new ways. So of course when Pep made the call, Götze answered without hesitation. As a young up and coming player where there was so much hype about him, this was a chance to work with the "best" and realise his potential.
As I saw how Bayern played, Pep's philosophy and the times in which Götze was on the pitch, I knew something smelled of expired egg. It was obvious to anyone who knows this game that the way in which Götze played would not work well with how Pep wanted his teams to operate. It was fast against slow. Possession against the swifness of the counter attack. Two worlds colliding with the one casualty being the young German kid.
Seeing this, I did videos and wrote an article on how Götze needed to take his talents elsewhere as he would continue to regress under Pep who did not know how to use him. The Mario that I saw playing in Pep's system was not the same one who linked up so beautifully with Reus and Lewandowski at Dortmund or who scored the best world cup winning goal in history. I did not see that player in the red of Bayern...but for some reason, Götze kept at it as I think the bench at Bayern makes your ass healthier.
So here we are, as this may or may not be a rumour where there is talk of Liverpool potentially being interested in the services of mister Mario himself. But there are whispers that he is finally ready to move with even Matthaus urging him to leave. It's not too late as he's still only 25, but there's another aspect to this which may allow him to change his mind and stay.
The reason why Götze has not worked at Bayern is not because he is overrated. An overrated player doesn't score that kind of goal in a world cup final. It's also not something wrong with the Bayern changing room or taps that make Götze allergic to them. It's far simpler than that. Pep Guardiola and Götze are not the right fit. It happens. Managers have their players who can slot in perfectly into their system and understand their philosophy of how the game is to be played. Götze just isn't a Pep kind of player and would flourish in a more freeflowing way of playing.
Enter Emperor Carlo.
Ancelotti and Pep have totally different philosophies of how to approach the game. Where Pep likes his team to be married to the ball, Ancelotti is more about total football and keeping that ball moving with a positive and attacking approach. Götze could possibly fit in very well with this philosophy where there is less focus on keeping hold of the ball in a slower game. I'm not saying that he will definitely work, but it's something to consider because of how different the two coaches are.
So the question now is whether Götze should make that move. Forget the Ancelotti factor and find a new team. Perhaps join up with the man who made him known to the big stage who's now kicking his feet up in the city of Liverpool.
Put it this way. If Liverpool is the only option for him on the table, then I'd say he should roll that dice and see how things work out with Ancelotti. But if we're talking Juventus or maybe even Real Madrid with Zidane on the wheel, then that is something he should strongly consider. Because I mean no offence to the great city of Liverpool, the Beatles or its fans, but Götze is too good for them. We're talking about one of the brightest talents in German football which is seeing perhaps its biggest boom that they have ever had.
That kind of talent deserves to be at best of the best. HH
