At 38, Buffon is One of the Best in the World
"Form is temporary; Class is permanent"
Your boy Gianluigi perfectly exemplifies this statement. After agreeing to extend his stay with Juventus till he's 40, us fans will have the privilege to see one of the best and longest serving goalkeepers that the game has ever seen. Let me stress that, Buffon even at his age is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
When talking of the best, many will obviously want to point to Neuer who many consider is number one goalkeeper around. It's a solid argument, but it can be countered. As great as the sweeping-keeping German is, he's not been at the top as long as Buffon has. Who knows whether he will reach dip in form like Casillas did, which is what lead to his departure from Madrid?
Buffon hasn't always been amazing, but for his exceptionally long career, he's always been in that top three slot. From producing inhuman saves when he was at Parma which is what lead to the world wanting his signature, to producing match-winning saves for Juventus even at his age. Buffon has consistently maintained an excellent level all through his career that's still yet to meet its final full-stop.
Normally you would raise an eyebrow when a thirty-eight year old would want to extend his contract. For someone so old, you would want them to step aside for a younger keeper. I was even calling for Buffon to give up the number one slot in Italy for either De Sanctis or Sirigu who I felt were younger and better keepers. But that's what legends do, they shut people up like me. Buffon is still the top of his game even at his age and has shown no wear or tear in his bones with his superb reflexes.
Juventus still have the legend as their last line of defence and every fan will be hoping they can give Gianluigi the right send-off with a Champions League medal. HH
