With No Marchisio or Verratti, Conte is Mistaken NOT taking Giovinco
Italy were already outsiders to win these Euros with a full-strength team. But with two of their best and very important players missing it due to injury, I assumed Conte would turn to the small maestro to fill in.
He hasn't, and that isn't good.
Now, I don't want to hear any apologists for this decision to say all because Giovinco plays in the MLS he is not good enough to be in this team. I have two things to say to that. Firstly, a good player is a good player is a good player. Giovinco is a very good player and would help Italy a lot either as a starter or off the bench. You need to go into these tournaments with as many options at your disposal. Different opponents calls for different players. How many small, skillful and quick players who can work in tight spaces do Italy have in that squad?
I'll wait.
Secondly, is the Serie A really all that good? This isn't 1996, it's 2016. The league is not what it once was. Are we really going to sweep under the rug that this great Serie A allowed a team to go from the relegation zone to winning the trophy with games to spare? And in this same league Sassuolo, the smallest ever town to produce a club have a good chance of getting into Europe?
So I'm sorry, that argument is moot. Giovinco is good enough to be in this team and with those missing players, there's even more reason for him to be included. I for one as a fan of the player, want to see him play. I've never felt he was given a good run in the national team and wasn't fully trusted by Prandelli. Conte could have put that right and let me tell you...this is the perfect time to do so.
These Euros are anybody's to win. Almost anyone can beat anyone. There is not great gulf in class between any of the teams. This is the very competition that a player like Giovinco can pop into, under the radar and surprise everyone.
Conte...reverse your decision and take your boy to France. HH
