AFCON 2017 - Major Changes Needed for Ghana to Succeed

Are Ghana serious about wanting to win this cup or they just want to flex and pose?

I need to know this now. If they aren't serious then there is nothing more to discuss and I can stop writing now.

But if the Black Stars want to bring back the big trophy for the first time since 1982, then a lot of changes need to be made.

First off, Jordan Ayew cannot play another minute in this tournament.

He was garbage against Uganda and showed that he is not up to the standard that should be in a starting lineup, let alone a squad. I expect him to be on a flight back to Birmingham immediately.

Then we have the striker issue. Gyan is a legend for Ghana. He's been with the team a long time, and he's been the face of the resurgent side who took the world by storm in the grand tournament back in 2010.

Well, six years on, Gyan is older and not the same player he was before. As the focal point of the attack, Gyan is not the right man for the job. He's too slow, not sharp enough, and Ghana will find it hard to create any chances or score any goals with him as their lone striker.

Now I think Grant should have enough faith in his midfielders, to get a striker to partner up with Gyan and have one less player in the midfield. Andre Ayew may be possible for that role, but he may be better suited stretching the game and playing out wide.

Whatever the case, this is a change that must be made because Ghana were tepid and very ordinary in their first game. Having to rely on penalties to win this competition is a bad road to go down on, and it didn't serve them well in that infamous game against Uruguay.

And being finalists two years ago doesn't give them a state of grace, or some sort of mystic power over teams. They need to get serious and start playing better.

Beyond that, the whole team must play better. The quality of the passing, and the amount of times play broke down left me uninspired and expecting yet another disappointing exit for the Black Stars.

Grant has said they will improve, and they simply must because Mali and Egypt won't be easy games.

Oh and Avram, please sit up when you are taking a press conference and have a more upbeat body-language on the sidelines.
