Defense is FIRST Priority for Dortmund and Tuchel This Season
So in the aftermath of the Klopp legacy, Tuchel has a damn huge act to follow. Scrapping last season, to replicate the success that Klopp had with Dortmund is pretty much impossible in the next few years. But there are areas in which already Dortmund have improved upon, but it is right at the back that they were totally destroyed by all kinds of teams in the Bundesliga and that is where it needs to start for this man.
For some inexplicable reason, and Wengeritis may have something to do with this; Klopp decided to constantly play a high line, which meant that one well-timed ball would eventually lead to a goalscoring chance or a goal. Jurgen never changed it and they kept getting exposed, hence why they were fighting for relegation at one point last season. That is something that needs to totally be scrapped by Tuchel. This is the kind of game where once opponents have figured out your style, you need to switch it up. You don't even need to shelf it completely, but you need to offer other variances so it keeps that opposing manager guessing.
Both Hummels and Sokratis are very good defenders. Hummels is one of the best five central defenders in the world, and I would put Sokratis in the top ten. The thing though is they are not the quickest of defenders, which means the high-line is not a smart move. Dortmund can still play their attacking football, but don't have to be so gung-ho about it. If there is less pressure on that defense and even a bit of protection as well from someone like Gundogan who can sit deep, Tuchel ought to have faith in the abilities of Reus, Aubamayeng and the Mkhi one, only if he leaves his brick shoes at home. It may take some getting used to for fans who have been accustomed to the crazy pressing energy that was used under Klopp, but they need to just accept reality. Klopp is gone, Dortmund don't have all the players they used to have, and you must constantly evolve.
Look at Barcelona. The tic-tac-toe beat up so many teams for all those years, but once it got figured out, Pep left town and Barcelona knew that they had to change things up. Now, they are a far more attacking team, and it's time for others to now try and figure out a way of beating them with a new system that they have. Dortmund and Tuchel need to bring that in, and I have already said this before, apart from Bayern and Wolfsburg, I don't have a lot of high praise for the other teams. Dortmund can really get into top four if they get the tactics right and they can keep Hummels and Reus fit, who are very important players for them. It will be very hard for Tuchel to follow in the large footsteps of Klopp, but it's all about baby steps and getting them back amongst the elite of the Bundesliga.
