Van Gaal Needs A Striker as Rooney CANNOT Play the Position
Rooney is not a striker. That much is bloody certain after the Spurs match today. Apart from the match being a damn joke with about three chances for both teams in an hour and a half, United were really missing a cutting edge upfront, and that was really down to not having a natural frontman that can make the runs and be in the position needed to utilize the good crossing from Young and through-balls from Mata.
Once upon a time, Wayne Jeremiah Rooeny used to be a striker. He was supposed to be England's next big thing after he announced himself in the Euro 2008. It just never happened for him and just hasn't lived up to that hype. He began to fall into a different position which is the one that you see Messi has mastered and Muller also plays. He's the dude behind the striker, the creator and facilitator that sits in the hole and links the midfield and attack. It's a position that he prefers as his footballing skills are very much married to it. To be a striker and one that is effective, you need to have great anticipation and awareness of play which is something that Rooney just does not have in comparison to guys like Benzema and Aguero who just know where to be in the right time....but more Sergio, who is without doubt the best striker in the Premiership and one of the best strikers in the world.
Man United cannot rely again on witchcraft to save them this season. That team I saw out there could still get top four, but it should be all about winning the title. That is the main aim, and if Van Gaal does not bring in a natural striker, then United will miss out winning the title. It's really as simple as that. Rooney just does not possess the attributes needed to be the frontman. All you have to do is compare him to Diego Costa or Aguero. There is a certain mentality and psychology that is needed when playing the position. Costa and Aguero are always moving forward. They only pass when they need to and their very first thought is to try and beat their man, or get a shot on goal, and they are constantly trying to bamboozle defenders to sneak a run behind them so they can get that tap-in.
Rooney seems to prefer to get players more in the game than get his own. He's not greedy or selfish enough to be a striker, which is exactly what is needed from that position. What Van Gaal needs, for lack of a better term, is a greedy bastard, who lives and breathes goals, and only then can United actually properly say they can win the Premiership. At the moment, Chelsea and City are in stronger positions based off of Costa and Aguero and Arsenal have the best midfield which can get goals from everywhere, which leaves United lagging behind and if they keep on bringing this nonsense performance that they brought against Spurs, I am not sure that even the greatest witchdoctor will be able to save them.
