Mourinho Must Make BIG Decisions for Chelsea to Recover
Sometimes, a little breather can help you gather your thoughts and give you a new breath of fresh air to go into the next match with. If anybody needed a break it was Chelsea. This has given time for Mourinho to try and react to new ground for him as a manager. Losing two out of the first four matches of the season. It's unknown territory and Jose has needed this time to take in the gravity of the situation.
Chelsea are struggling. Players are not playing well. Even the one match they won, they could have easily lost and they did not look in command. In short, they have not played a single good game this season but more importantly, my Boy has to make some serious decisions as to who he decides on taking the pitch against Everton, which WON'T be an easy game for him. They looked very good against Southampton, and anything less than a top performance from ALL in Chelsea colors, then they will get beat.
It's time to let go of personal attachments, or close ties, and do what is best for Chelsea and what will help move them onward and forward in their quest to defend their title.
All eyes have to be on that defense. It's not been good. They have been slow, tactically a shambles and have
not been able to cope with the speed of the Premiership. This is only after four games, and not in April when players start to tire. So imagine if there is a continuing decline as the months progress; it would be like putting toddlers to man the defensive wall. It's up to Mourinho to really decide who is not cutting it and perhaps start thinking about trying to employ a back three or defensive midfielder who can offer more protection for them. Zouma looks to now be put in the dragon's den, but the decisions to be made are who to play alongside him.
The huge purple elephant in the room has to be Terry. Leader, Legend, Racist...and Adulterer. He is the face of the club and its captain. Mourinho has to be straight with him and find out if he can cut it this season. If he can't, and he does not feel it in his gut that he can raise his game for the remainder of the season, then it will have to be bye-bye Terry. Being on the bench would be a tough pill to swallow, but that time is coming where Terry will have to choose whether to be a part-time Chelsea player or move on to be in a first team. Look at Gerrard, he saw he would be given less minutes and knew he had to move on.
There is also the midfield issue and a small case of Fabregas. For some reason Cesc has just given up being a midfielder and is perhaps already thinking about retirement a lot earlier than usual. This was a guy who used to be one of the best passers of the ball around, and was a playmaking machine for Barcelona, Arsenal, Spain and Chelsea....at least for the first half of last season. Mourinho needs to rediscover that quality from him, because he is the only true creative player in the team. Everyone else are workhorses in the Mourinho vein and cannot provide the kind of quality in the attacking area that Fabregas can. That has been a big reason as to why they have been struggling because they have just not been able to keep the ball well and move it around as well as they used to last season.
Then there's Hazard. Chelsea's best player last season and the PFA deserved winner. Eden has been asleep. For Chelsea and Belgium. He's just not awake, and that has seriously hurt Chelsea because of how much they relied on him last year, and how often he delivered when called upon. As good as Pedro is, he can't do what Hazard did last season. He was brought in to take the load off of Hazard, but not to be the only attacking threat for the team. Mourinho needs to decide whether to bench him for a few games to help him mentally, or work with him one-on-one to try and find out why he's not been as clinical as he was last season. Once Hazard can be back to his best, beating players, running into the danger area and scoring as well as assisting, then Chelsea can once again be a threat.
Man City have started very well, but people need to give Mourinho some respect and just a little bit of time. A season is a long time, and a lot can change. The reality of the situation though is if Chelsea are not back to their best from now, and the gap widens even further, then even if City drop points, Mourinho will have to hold his hands up and admit defeat. This is big boy football and you are only allowed a certain number of losses. Too many...and you're out of time.
