Winners want to avoid PSG in Champions League Knockouts
It was always going to be a shootout between Madrid and PSG for the right of winners in this group. And it was that game in Spain where PSG totally outplayed Madrid who were embarrassingly defensive, only for the Blancos to get the G. Oh, and it didn't help that PSG had two bricks up front who weren't interested in putting the ball in the back of the net.
For PSG coming second though, this isn't a match that Wolfsburg, Chelsea or Atletico would want to have. They are very talented team with some of the best names in the business gracing the pitch. Despite what drawbacks they have of Blanc's unimaginative tactics that literally puts the hinges on their attacking display, they have two or three players that can win a game. I'm not talking about Ibra or Cavani, I am referring to Patore, Lucas, Verratti and so on. These are excellent footballers, who with every season, gain more experience in this elite club competition.
It's a crime that this PSG team have never made a semi-final. If you were to read me off the full list of those in this team, I would slap you for making any notion of them getting knocked out before the last four in the last three seasons. But that has been the reality, with Barcelona totally disrespecting them in both legs. When that will change, I don't know...because I have always attested that Blanc is the main culprit.
But, the more thought I have given to it, I think it's the amount of importance they put on Ibra and Cavani. For too many seasons, they have both flopped when they have been needed the most. You look back at that game in Spain where Cavani had some incredible chances. Even Giroud, who everyone mocks and throws tomatoes at, would have put away those chances that fell to Cavani. And Ibrahimovic. For someone who is touted as one of the best strikers in the world, he played more like a spectator than anyone deserving of even half that praise.
Despite this, they are a threat. Pastore is one of the best attacking midfielders in the world, and can ball against anybody. And you have Verratti who for the past two years has been one of the very best central midfielders in the world. With those two, as well as two of the best defensive midfielders money can buy in Matuidi and Motta, these boys are stacked. And if you're not Bayern or Barcelona, you will need to work hard for your G's because Thiago Silva is a very good defender, who you can rely on. As for his Brazilian friend who plays next to him....eh, not so much.
I think Blanc would want to avoid the German and Spanish champions. But apart from those two powerhouses, he must believe they can beat any of the other winners. Atletico is tricky, but they are beatable. Deep down though, seeing how they have been going in their home league, Blanc would want the third part of the epic trilogy with Chelsea. If they were to get drawn together, all my chips, house, lungs and intestines would be on PSG sorting them out over the two legs. Even with the "striking" talents of Cavani on display.
