Has the Real Rooney Returned? Don't Jump the Gun Yet...
I thought he was done. I was convinced that Wayne Jeremiah would actually go through an entire season showing the world how a Brick does it in style. He'd been garbage for most of it so far, but then scored a very nice goal from a Martial assist which took me aback.
Has a Brick freed himself from his shackles?
Then he had this performance against Newcastle...
He reminded people that there is a really good footballer here. Someone who can be very vital in making United more relevant than squeezing their way into the tight dress that is the top four. This was the Rooney who can actually contribute to the team, bring players into the mix, serve up intelligent passes, hold the ball up and keep United on the counter offensive, and the Rooney that can hook up a sweet strike.
Now everyone has taken the short-term approach and proclaimed Rooney as being back, and reminding us that he was never done. Even hearing Robbie Savage claim that we had been too harsh on poor Wayne, and the criticism he got was unfair. These are the kinds of reactions you get when people are hyped up and living in the moment. It would not go amiss if one would take a deep breath, relax, and cast their minds over the past few months.
Rooney has deserved every bit of critcism from me and others. He's had a crap season so far, and one quality performance does not negate that. Need I also remind the public that this performance came against a team who are dogging it out at the basement of the league. Let Rooney put this up against City or Arsenal or even West Ham, then we can start talking about him returning to his best. Till then, this is only one match.
It's up to Van Gaal to get him playing like this in every game. Whether he needs to starve him, spank him or threaten his family; the Van of the Gaal has to somehow get Rooney involved and playing as well as he did against Newcastle for the remainder of the season. If he can do that, which is a tall order, then we can now begin to put United back in the title race. Rooney's role is very important for United attacking and getting goals, and as we all know, bulding the fishnet is a very good thing in football.
Well done Wayne for now, but let's see you do this over the next four to five games.
