So we have the first casualty of the season. After Di Canio decided to have a nice friendly chat with the fans after their heavy loss, it seemed the board told him to pack his bags. Honestly, in my own humble and personal opinion, this is a far too hasty decision. But, once you dig deeper....there may have been other reasons.
Aston Villa last season were on a wonderful losing streak but somehow, they managed to turn that around and they are now a pretty OKAY team...with Benteke in their squadron. So, it seems mad for Di Canio to have ONLY been sacked purely because of these early setbacks. Yes, one point from five games is not great....but I do believe that there are still thirty-three games left.
I do believe it was Di Canio's public appraisal of his players that cost him the job. It seemed to have upset the players and once you have low morale and players who are not behind the manager, then it's very hard to turn around that poisonous atmosphere. So, to cut their losses....ADIOSO, PAOLO.
I have no issue with a manager airing out his stinking laundry. Players should shape up, or get shipped out. If you play well, you will be praised...if you play crap, then you deserve to be insulted privately and in publicly. If the board feel that was their main reason for letting him go, then that is truly wrong. Players should stop hiding behind criticism and they must shoulder some of the blame as well.
They say Di Matteo may be coming in, which would be a great choice. There is NO way he should have been sacked by West Brom or Chelsea. He would get Sunderland playing good football and inject some morale into them. But, as for Paolo...his crazy nature and intensity really does not bode well in England and unless he changes his whole attitude....there's always Italy...or Mars?
Bada-boom friends...
