Don't Hate Scholes, He is only Speaking the TRUTH
So Scholes was asked what he thought of England's chances at the World Cup, and he simply said they have no chance. No sideway chat, or back-alley thoughts, just a straight damn answer that was the damn truth. Some people may call him unpatriotic or pessimistic, but that is why what he said coming from the quiet one should be taken seriously. He brings no hype or Hollywood, he is REAL to the core. Once you listen to his reasons, they make perfect sense.
The Three Lions will be heading into the World Cup hoping their star, Rooney, can finally live up to expectations on the big stage. It's been far too many tournaments where he has come up short, and blaming the coach gets tiresome. Great players play great despite the hindrances a bad coach may give them. Remember Domenech?
As Scholes explained however, he and I both share the same view that I just don't trust England against an Italy or Brazil in a knockout game. The ONLY way they walk off that pitch as winners is either by luck, or somehow winning on penalties. Luck.
Scholes is just telling it as it is. England can beat Poland and Ukraine all day long as he said, but when it comes time for MEN to rise and really play against a higher class team that are ready to go ALL OUT, England fall into their shell. Gerrard and his pals will start defending and Rooney will be scampering back looking for scraps. It's both a talent problem and a psychological problem.
Hodgson is from that old way of thinking. He has brought SOME interesting things to the team like Townsend and the way Welbeck and Sturridge are being used. That's all well and good against...no offence....POLAND and MONTENEGRO. Against a better team that will have better defenders and an attack that WON'T waste their chances, England just stand no chance. They don't have enough quality individually and have not been able to compete with teams of a higher level since all the way back in 1990.
England fans could do themselves a huge favor if they follow Scholes's chain of thought. Support your country and be passionate about them. Curb that enthusiasm though, and keep your aspirations in check. I don't want to hear anything about England being amongst the favorites or this being "their year". They are NOT good enough and a Quarter Final is the furthest I see them going. If England fans for ONCE go in without unrealistic expectations and agree along with Scholes that they are not good enough...then perhaps it just might be the year where Rooney and Sturridge may surprise everyone...
