The Eaglets are....CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!
They did it. Mission Accomplished. The Eaglets have now made Nigeria the most SUCCESSFUL nation at this level. They had to do it the hard way and as I predicted, despite the scoreline, this was their tightest game. So, how did they win it?
It really was a case of the gulf in quality. Mexico dominated the first half and started well. They had a few good chances and Nigeria found it hard to get into their rhythm. Then came the reason why the Eaglets won; THE ABILITY TO TAKE YOUR CHANCES where the difference in quality comes in. Nigeria got Mexico on their counter and executed...with the help of Aguirre. Again, when Muhammed crossed the ball in, Kelechi EXECUTED. Then, to round off a Man of the Match performance, Muhammed scored one of the goals of the tournament. A perfect ending...perhaps.
This was by far Nigeria's best victory. Forget the scoreline. Those that watched the match would have seen a very close encounter. Mexico played a very good game and had good chances, making it very difficult for Nigeira. But Alampasu needs special mention for some excellent saves. Without those saves, the scoreline WOULD have been different. But I liked how Nigeria dug in deep, and kept themselves in the game. Despite Mexico having chances, every time Nigeria came forward, they looked more threatening. The level of technical quality and footballing intelligence was OUTSTANDING. There may be thoughts of them being over-age, but until you can give me hard proof...these teenagers have produced one of the greatest tournament displays in this tournament's history.
Mr. Musa....PROFESSOR Musa. You can heap praise on the players, but what I saw was excellent organization and superb discipline. The way in which Muhammed was utilized as a wing back as well as having defenders to cover him. The excellent defending from Bello and others, and the interchange between Yahaya, Awoniyi and Kelechi are all bred from proper preparation. So Musa must be given credit for the way he set his team up, and the excellent way in which they kept shape AND ATTACKED. This is the Nigeria I know. A team full of ideas and the ability to punish you in a billion ways.
The future must be green and white and the work must start NOW, to develop these players. Kelechi and Yahaya ought to be included in the World Cup squad just for experience. No rush, but just to be involved as Ronaldo was in 1994. I do feel that they have the quality to really be something, even this early. I just pray and hope that there is proper development into ensuring that these talents as well as others are not lost.
In closing, the Eaglets have done themselves proud. They have shown as I have said to people, Nigerians were born to play football. It's in our blood, and can't be removed. I am so glad the world is seeing that at the most purest level...Nigeria are the best footballing nation.
UP NIGERIA AND THE EAGLETS! WELL DONE!
