So Costa shall officially start his international career with Spain tonight. He's the star striker of last season that helped them win the league, he is the man that rejected Brazil and now he must try and do what Villa did four years ago...LEAD the line and DELIVER.
What will be key for Spain is how well Costa can read the game of Iniesta, Fabregas and. Silva. The kind of runs he makes, and the timing of the runs. Costa is very different from Villa and a bit similar to Blondie in the way that they are target men. What Costa has shown more than any other Spanish striker is his DEADLY finishing. If Spain can get in good crosses in the box, Costa can finish it in various ways.
Spain however are not a team known for relying on a striker. For some inexplicable reason, they won the Euros WITHOUT a striker. So I'm sure that they would cope if Costa is not up to it. But this is a far bigger tournament with teams of different continents, and I believe Costa playing well will definitely help to see them through.
Tonight, Costa can get his confidence going against a Dutch team that are made mostly of homebased talent, which can give him the opportunity to test them. He does not necessarily have to be one with the tic-tac-toe system, but he just needs to offer an alternative to Spain's midfielders creating chances. End of the day, it's all about getting that goal and Costa can give Spain that old-skool hustle of just putting the ball in the net, no matter how ugly.
