I love him. He looks like straight out of a cartoon. He seems insane(maybe less so than Cannibal Suarez) and he LOVES his boys and has the enthusiasm of a kid. But, we may laugh at his madness on the sidelines, but we overlook his brilliant tactics in all three games. But against a very good Croatian side, it was his tactics that WON them this game and pretty much kept the Eastern Europeans quiet.
Croatia were the team with the "big" names. Mandzukic, Modric, Rakitic. I suppose that is why everyone thought they would beat Mexico who have a lot of home-based players. But it's all about what happens on the pitch, which is what was proven by Greece against the "stars" of Ivory Coast. Herrera did NOT allow any service to come to Mandzukic, he nullified the threat of Olic on the wing with his crossing, and refused entrance into the danger area for Modric and Rakitic. The first half was all about Mexico shutting the door and testing the Croatian rearguard.
Once the second half came around, Mexico opened that ass up. They attacked more, and began to take the game to a now tired Croatian team. It was like Ali and Foreman. They let Croatia throw everything at them, which simply wasn't enough, then once the Europeans got tired, Mexico HIT them. Three strikes, goodnight sweetheart, game-over.
Herrera has a team, one of the most complete and organised teams Mexico have ever had. You may call them underdogs against the more experienced and the high-performing Dutch, but any team that has a good defence and know how to counter are capable of beating ANYBODY. That right there is a simple and pure fact. Mexico ain't going to just roll over and follow the script. This is a team you underestimate at your peril.
