But then people who are proponents of these two international flops, would say the World Cup does not matter. They would point to the records, goals, champions league trophies and all that and say the World Cup is just not on the level of club football's major prize. And I am seeing more and more media attention on the champions league and forces trying to push this as the numero uno in football. One problem though...
Take a guy in the states, who views it as soccer with his Dolphins jersey, bud and big grin. If you ask him to name the last three champions league winners, he'd probably say manchester...all three times. He has NO CLUE what happens at that side of football. But with the USA's exploits at this year's world cup, you can bet he can name the country who took that lovely gold trophy.
That's the problem. The Champions League may have a higher standard which is debatable with Arsenal and City being laughable...as well as Juve and Liverpool. But the World Cup is probably the most popular sporting event, as it has now superseded the Olympics. So when you make your name on that big stage, it really does mean something. It is historic and history will always favour the World Cup over anything in the Champions League. Mario Goetze may never be that great player in the future, but he has achieved something much greater than all of Messi's and Cristiano's records and titles.
So does the World Cup matter? It does and always will. That four year wait is always an agonizing one and once it comes, for those brief two months, this shitty world poisoned with far too many evil and idiotic people seems bearable due to that brief joy the greatest sporting event brings.
I am sorry...but that World Cup medal is needed. Without it...you just don't have the complete repertoire that makes you one that has "done it ALL."
The World Cup matters.
