It pretty much passed me by the fact that Neymar was now the official captain and NOT Silva. You would think an older, more mature player and leader would keep the armband. But we have to cast our minds back a few months to when Brazil faced Chile at penalties.
All through the tournament, Brazil were riding on emotions rather than football and that cost them when Germany delivered the seven deadly sins to the via DHL. But when I knew that one had to worry for Brazil was that second round match against Chile. It SHOULD have been a tough but winnable fixture for the five time winners at the cribb. But Sanchez and his boys made the game very difficult.
So we come to penalties, and emotions are at their HIGHEST. Then I'm now hearing afterward with Brazil making it through that Thiago Silva refused to take a penalty and was in tears due to the nervousness. That is NOT good. For a captain, even within the cribb, a leader must inspire confidence for his fellow soldiers to follow. You can't be down on your knees and face buried!
I look at Neymar. Young, up and coming but as Maradona pointed out, the way in which he CARRIED the team was great to watch. It was great and just like the old days seeing an individual step outside of the norm and grab the game by the scruff of the neck. That is why he deserves the armband as that is someone other players can look to and be just as courageous as him.
So Silva may feel it is unjust to have the armband taken away from him, but a captain must do more than just play well. Silva is a GREAT defender, but when it comes to the size and weight of your balls, Neymar is one of the TOP dogs in that department. And Dunga sees that and unlike my big-watch wearing friend, Enrique, he realises that the team must be built around this jewel....a jewel who we as football lovers want to see sparkle into the next great legend.
Thiago....there is a certain weight your balls need to be for that armband to be given to you...
