What the HELL kind of Football are Man United Playing?

I would really love someone to please sit me down, with a cup of coffee and pecan pie (well baked) and just tell me precisely what kind of football United are trying to play. Maybe it's just me, but for a club of such standing, surely with the game at 1-1 against Leicester and for the chance to go top of the table, they would be a bit more positive going forward with the ball?

Throughout the match, there was no cutting edge, no penetration and no urgency going forward with the need to try and win the game. It looked as though the mentality was to be happy with a draw, rather than go out and beat a much weaker team, albeit one that has been playing well above their capabilities. For a team who have been known to go out and attempt to win every single game and not just settle for a draw, this is definitely a new experience for someone like me and a very painful one for the fans (even those glory hunters as well).

Moyes may have not had the most successful season with United, but at least they were entertaining and he tried to maintain the kind of positive football that Ferguson demanded. The issue was the team was far too open and he did not have the experience and knowledge of Ferguson to balance defense and attack, which meant they ended up on the wrong side of very entertaining games. I don't care what anyone says, I miss the Moyes days and I feel bad for contributing to those rather mean memes that featured him...even though they were pretty funny.

Back to the juju users. I am of the firm belief that the witchcraft is back in play. It works when the team is playing so crap that they need "divine" intervention to assist them and even though United were not playing as badly as that team in white who got pimped by Barcelona, they were clueless in attack. Just like the Watford game where you thought it would end in a draw, they managed to get a goal out of nothing. In this game as well, with Leicester doing all the attacking and being far more alive; just like magic, they get themselves back in the game with the German who refuses to say it's all over.

I've been defending Van Gaal and I still do. Anyone who has to field a player like Rooney needs to be given the benefit of the doubt. But this is the Premiership of 2015 and not 2009. United have enough gifted players to go out and beat teams in what is much weaker league. The issue is, apart from Rooney, these players are being told to pass first and to maintain their shape...and not much else. I'm trying to figure out what their strategy is for carving up chances, and I can't seem to find it. When that ball gets hit down the wing, it just gets sent straight back. There is no striker in the middle who can hold the ball up and give a good hustle to defenders. Then we have poor Martial who now has even more pressure upon him to make things happen after his amazing start in the team. I mean, did people really think a teenager would just score in every match and bail United out time and time again?

Problem is, you can't really criticize Van Gaal. They are near the top of the table, and results are all that matter. But this is the Premiership though, and it's not really only about results. Especially with the amazing history that United have had, it's about a lot more than that. The way in which the team plays is just as important. The fans won't stand for years of a possession game that frowns upon attacking football, even if it brings trophies. Again, this is the Premiership and not Serie A. You have to run, and be active and want to always score goals. The fans demand to be entertained. So that is where the disconnect is happening between fan and manager. Unless Van Gaal somehow finds a player as good as Martial who can bring some excitement into the team, it's going to be very awkward for United fans if they keep bringing this odd football whilst in serious title contention, which Moyes was unable to do.
