Juventus Win their FIFTH Title In a Row. Let's Praise But also Worry
I grew up with the Serie A being known as the toughest league in the world. It was where any player had to go in order to prove to the world that they were elite. If you would have told a younger me that a team would win the Serie A five times in a row, I would have thought you had just sniffed some glue and grass.
Nope.
This is very real.
After Roma defeated Napoli, that delivered Juventus their fifth scudetto. You heard it right. What was once the toughest league in the world, where even retaining the title was a feat in itself has now been reduced to a one-club league. And it even gets worse than that.
Juventus got off to such a bad start after four games that they were near the bottom of the table. So naturally, I proclaimed that there would be no way they would be able to make their way back up. With the losses of Pirlo, Tevez and Vidal; this would finally be a new Juventus that Allegri would have to build up yet again and be on a level-playing field with the rest of the league.
How wrong I was.
Allegri ironed out the mistakes in defence, got the best out of Dybala and got the team functioning again. It resulted on an amazing winning run which put them right back to the top of the league. Then there was that battle with Napoli who were also having their best season since the days of Maradona. That all changed in the game that decided the title when Zaza scored the deflected shot that gave them the victory. It was game, set and match. Was only a matter of time and mathematics.
Now that it's all confirmed, I have to congratulate the Juventus organisation and Allegri. As Bonnucci said, everyone including myself counted them out late last year. They proved everyone wrong and they showed just how much character this team has. It could have even been better as they should be playing a Champions League semi-final this week. If only Allegri had kept Morata on...
There's a darker side to this success story though. What does this say about a league that was once the sternest test in all of football? What does it say about the rest of the teams who allowed Juventus to go from the bottom all the way to the top and win the league with games to spare?
It doesn't make for good reading. The way Juventus won this title doesn't bode well at all for the future of this league. It's very possible that they can win this again next year and the year after that. As long as they keep the core of the team and there's no money coming in for the rest of the other clubs, I see no reason why Juventus can't make it six titles in a row.
Six. That's ridiculous.
But ask yourself this question...would you bet against Juventus next season? HH
