Zidane's Mystique Will Grow if he Wins Champions League as Coach
Well, he's in the final. You can all say what you want about those that they have played to get here. Fact is, they are in the final and Zidane is ninety minutes or more away from winning the big one. He did it as a player with the greatest ever G in a Champions League final, but he can further imprint himself on the competition by doing it as the coach.
I was one of the first people that didn't think Zidane would amount to much with Real Madrid. Even with all the talent that Madrid have, I thought this would be another case of a great player not being a great coach. Anyone remember how well the legendary Maradona did with Argentina?
However, Zidane has surprised me greatly. He has racked up the wins, got the team playing attractive football and this has included which was his finest hour to this date, the Clasico victory, which showed great tactical understanding in exploiting the weaknesses of Barcelona and playing to his team's strengths.
Coming into the final, Real are favorites. They have to be. Second in the league, the team who are coming in on a good winning run, and they have the kinds of players that can and have won a Champions League final. So it makes it ever more likely that Zidane will become even more of a legend and show that his footballing talents extend beyond his magical feet.
It would also be very rude. Waltzing right in and just nabbing a Champions League trophy without even spending a full season with the team.
If we are to say that he was to win the Champions League, then that would make Zidane even greater. Right now, he is a horseman and one of the finest footballers that this beautiful game has ever seen. But just imagine if he were to lift up that trophy as a manager.
How many great players have won major trophies as coaches? Most of them have either never gone into management or they have failed at it. Zidane would be in a very exclusive club, achieving individual greatness as a player and as a coach.
All for the same club, mind you. So I sincerely hope that if Zidane lifts up the trophy this Saturday, the Madrid sculptors, start gathering their finest gold and build up the biggest, baddest statue to be erected just outside the Bernabeu. Because you know, that's what you do with true legends of your club.
It would be pretty rude though if he was to just walk right in and win it....HH
