It's very important how Messi wins this competition. If Di Maria and Aguero are the ones who do the heavy-lifting with Lionel being a sideshow bob, then I'm afraid that won't be acceptable. The people of Argentina won't accept it and will continue to put him below Maradona in terms of importance to their country.
Lionel has to lead from the front and carry the team in the way that Maradona did in 86 and 90. That's what the people expect and it's what the world wants to to see as well. For someone who has taken the game to a different level, we have all been waiting for him to finally live up to his own reputation for Argentina as that has been the asterisk which has stopped him from being called a horseman.
