The thing about football and its very tribal nature, is you are not allowed to have affection for any other team other than your own.
It's your tribe, with all other outsiders being treated as enemies. The foul villains that you are trained to hate, or despise if they are a rival.
Well, I have always believed that the love of football should trump all. At the end of the day, our love for our team should not supercede the love for what is the greatest sport in the world. That should always be at the summit, and be the constant emotion we have.
If we have that, then Dortmund are a team that you must not only admire but have some level of affection for, if you truly love the game of football.
The game can be played in a myriad of ways. Defensive counter-attacks, balanced possession play, the tiki-taka (or tic-tac-toe), unorthodox setups that are difficult to decipher.
But with all these formations and tactics, we surely fall in love with how teams play the offensive, no-holds barred, one-touch football.
That really is the true essence of football. Not the only way it should be played, but in a perfect world, how we would want every team to interpret the game.
It isn't a perfect world and as Dortmund have found out, playing in such a way will get found out against a more physical, and disciplined team or sleep, drink and eat tactics. So against Atletico or Juventus, Dortmund would surely fall.
They are far from perfect. Their defence isn't great, their players are young, inexperienced and make mistakes and they have lost games against teams you would expect them to beat. But with all those shortcomings, they are still such a pleasure to watch and even their imperfections is what makes them more of a draw.
They are a team that will always play one way, win or lose, they stick by their philosophy. So on the one hand, you will see a team just waltz past their open defence, then next week, they can put five or six past you, with a display of the most exciting attacking football you will see.
That's just what makes them the best draw in football right now. They always put entertainment first, and bring a smile to your face with their always positive view on trying to get the goal and never settling.
Who knows whether it will yield trophies come the end of the season. One thing it will surely bring is the fun, which is badly needed in modern football.
