Has Hummels Put Himself Out of the Running for World Cup Start?
With Hummels suffering yet another injury and just FOUR months till the big one starts, has Mats maybe ruled himself out of a starting place? Looking at what Per is doing for Arsenal and how CONSISTENT he has been, the less said about the City and Liverpool match the better, Joachim may be keener on the tall blonde one than the tall dark haired one.
Much has been said about the issues between Mats and Joachim and Hummels being made a scapegoat for Super Mario getting those two goals in that semi that Germany were SUPPOSED TO win. But at the end of the day, performances are all that count...CONSISTENT performances. Before Hummels got injured, he was looking as most likely the one that would partner the immovable force of Boateng. Since the long injury, and this one...Joachim's eyes have been in England and seeing Mertesacker be an absolute rock and been the foundation for Arsenal, more or less, being such a great defensive force this season.
There is obviously time for Hummels to get back on track and put in some big performances. Apart from playing in the league, what will be KEY is how far Dortmund can go in the competition. Arsenal MOST LIKELY will lose to Bayern, likely...not definite, so that means Hummels, IF FIT, will have an opportunity to show what he can do against the best teams.
That is crucial, people. Mertesacker may be having a great season, but what happened against Liverpool and City? Hummels can put in a good argument that he can stand up to the best and hold his own. Because Joachim will be hoping that Germany go far and it will be about getting past those big teams, those fine details. Just like that goal they conceded against Spain in 2010, and those two goals against Italy in 2012, Joachim is looking for a defensive partnership that will be FULLY ATTENTIVE FROM THE FIRST TO THE LAST MINUTE OF THE MATCH. So that is where Mats still has a chance to show he can play well in the big matches as opposed to Mertesacker who was felt wanting against Liverpool.
If you were to ask me? It's very difficult. If you asked me some months ago, I would FULLY say Mertesacker. But after that beatdown from Liverpool and how Southampton ran him rugged...that spot is up for grabs. So right now, I want to see Hummels come back and see what does from now till May...but if he gets another injury, it's OVER.
