All Hail King Vargas - Chile's Savior!

Fabio Grosso.

Who would have thought he would turn out to be Italy's unlikely hero in 2006? A no-name nobody who scored one of the great World Cup goals and ended it all with the last decisive kick in the final. You always get those dudes that spring up.

It was supposed to be Sanchez's tournament. The rising star of 2010 and the one who had the standout season for Arsenal. All eyes were on him, and he's one of my guys, so I was expecting him to deliver the good when his country needed him. Now, relax, don't you even dare say that he has flopped or underachieved. He's had a very good tournament and played at an even higher intensity than he did at Arsenal. It's just that someone else has risen to the occasion when his country has come calling at its time of need, and that is King Vargas.

He's similar to Mboma. The Cameroon legend who was crap for Sunderland, but once he put on that Cameroon jersey, he transformed and was a scourge for Nigeria at the Nations Cup. Just like Vargas, who was pretty much non-existent and a waste of space for QPR, he has been the MAN for Chile. Coming up with important G's and what a damn cracker to send your country into the final of the Copa America. I was asleep and the goal woke me up...that's how big time it was.

The job is not done yet. If Vargas is to emulate what Grosso did nine years ago, then he will need to come up again with a crucial G against either Paraguay or Argentina in the final. He is now the talk of the town, but it can't go to his head.

THE JOB IS NOT DONE YET.

When you look at that goal, it is the perfect example of the kind of mentality that is needed for this football. It's not about passing and "sticking to the gameplan." Sometime you need to give two fingers to the strategy, go out and get it done. No ifs or buts, well maybe....

And Vargas has always been good. He impressed in the world cup, that is why I was surprised he did not have a better impact when he moved to QPR. But again, if you are going to flop more than six flip-flops for your club but you will rise like a phoenix when you put on your country's shirt...that is all I care about and that's what grants you entry in my own personal clubhouse where the drinks and ladies are free.

THE JOB IS NOT DONE YET.
