I like this. As the World Cup progressed, it all looked like the Messi show. Lionel Ritchie and his band with Sabella just being a mere figurehead. But as the matches got tighter and shit got realer, Sabella showed that THIS is a team effort. No one man can literally win a World Cup. Just like 1986, a star player, a team and the right tactics are the key ingredients to winning.
Holland was the actual first real test that Argentina faced. Messi was taken out and with no Di Maria, it seemed the match was there for Holland to win. Sabella weaved the power of DEFENSE to subdue Robben and keep the match level. It was the second time in the tournament that Sabella showed his talents to shut a team down by great strategic defending. Belgium, I thought, would run all over that ass but Argentina put in an old-skool performance to score and shut that door, throwing away the key.
On Sunday, Argentina will be facing the best team in the tournament. A team that can win close or win big. A totally functional machine that have found their formation and are ready. Sabella will somehow have to take those defensive performances and ramp them up even higher by at least two hundred and fifty percent. Because I am assuming Messi will get cornered, bullied and shut down by the German power.
This Final will not be a rout. That Brazil game was an anomaly, a rarity not ever seen before in this great competition. SUNDAY IS REAL. It's a Final and I predict a game tighter than a size zero's model waistline. That is why Sabella, just like Jogi, will be very crucial as to where the World Cup will go. Few chances, minimal mistakes and a game of high stakes. It will be Sabella not Messi who will need to show up for Argentina come Sunday.
Let's hope he doesn't actually FULLY faint this time
