How do you spell Proud? A.L.G.E.R.I.A!!!!!!
This is how any team should go out of a tournament. Not only were Algeria brave, but they could have beaten Germany. They just were not there to make it difficult for them, THEY COULD HAVE WON THE GAME. Tactically, Germany were beat-up in that first half and if only the Algerians lead by Silmani in attack could just compose themselves and put away their chances, then we might have seen a very different story.
It took Germany a hundred and twenty long and HARD minutes to get past zeeee Germans. Eventually, just like with Belgium against the Americans, the quality of the finishing came through. But Algeria OVERACHIEVED and for players of their level to give a VERY good German team, albeit hampered by crap tactics, a close game should make Algerians proud of these men.
Losing sucks, and I'm never going to deny that. Halihodzic is right to cry at the end because he knows that he had his tactics right over Joachim, and it was in that first half when they kept on beating that shaky defensive German line, and they had all those opportunities to score, that must hurt really bad. You just have to ask any German to know that they were there for the taking and to be beaten, but Algeria DID not punish them in that half.
With the Nations Cup to come, if Algeria can keep this group together and play with the same kind of passion and intensity, then they should aim to try and bring home the regional cup and build on what has been a memorable World Cup for them. Almost beating Belgium, drawing with Russia and slaughtering South Korea and so close to taking Germany out....that IS a tournament to remember.
